The CV joints, also called CV shafts or drive shafts, are super important in transferring power from the engine to the wheels. This makes the rotation smoother and more continuous. You can mainly find CV joints in front wheel drive vehicles, but they’re also found in some all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The main functions provided by CV joints are as follows:

  • The transmission of power: The CV joint takes the torque from the engine and sends it to the wheels. As the engine creates rotational power, it goes through the transmission or trans-axle to reach the CV joint, which then transfers this power to make the wheels move forward or backward.
  • Compensation for variations in axle length: In front-wheel drive vehicles, the CV joint compensates for changes in axle length as the suspension moves up and down. This is necessary because the distance between the engine and the front wheels changes when the suspension compresses or extends. The CV joint allows for this variation in length while keeping a consistent rotational speed.”
  • Flexibility and range of motion: The CV joint allows the drive axle to move smoothly and flexibly, accommodating the wheels and suspension system as they turn and adjust. This is important for maintaining a constant speed and angle, especially when steering or going over bumps.
  • The absorption of road irregularities: The CV joint helps absorb and dampen vibrations and shocks caused by road bumps and potholes. It does this by using bearings and grease to make rotation smooth and reduce the transmission of vibrations to the car’s frame.
